First of all: GREAT title.
Now on to the actual matter on hand. I find your exploration of the post-impact Yucatan fascinating. Your analysis of the Chicxulub impact and its implications for the Maya is quite thought-provoking The long-term environmental changes and how they may have catalyzed or accelerated the rise of agriculture in the Maya Lowlands is a novel perspective It’s intriguing to consider the role of resource scarcity and population pressure as factors driving innovation It seems Maya really are a good example to study this "punctuated equilibrium" How are ecological disruptions are driving societal adaptations and transformations? To see a connection between the K-Pg extinction event and the development of agriculture millennia later in the same region really makes you think and wonder about deeper connections and patterns Does not our current ecological situation which may force a rapid change in the way our food systems are organized provide some support for the kind of punctuated equilibrium that the fossil record seems to so strongly suggest? The world may have just started experiencing a new beginning akin to the Chicxulub impact Does this mean that one’s ability to anticipate change, to manage innovation and deal with the second and third-order effects is the single most important aspect of surviving as a civilization? Has our species' ability to innovate and adapt now come to a point where the next step in complexity requires a very different kind of substrate - perhaps one less carbon and more silicon-based? One question: why focus just on the Yucatan and the Maya when the effects of the impact were likely felt across the globe? Perhaps the agricultural revolution was triggered in other areas as well and there is much to be learned from the K-Pg boundary there as well Is there anything going on around that K-Pg boundary in other locations, perhaps even with hominins? In other words, I am very curious as to what kind of similar studies at other sites globally at the K-Pg boundary would show!
